I fell asleep in a driverless car
While at GitHub Universe last week, I started trying out the Waymo service that my coworkers were raving about, which is basically… an on-demand taxi with a robot driver.
In my first ride, I solidly screamed and then video called as many people as I could to show that I was in a car that moved by itself. What a concept. It freaked me out.
But then… I took another one and another one. And I think the thing that alarmed me the most was how quickly I forgot that there wasn’t a driver in the front seat.
The thing that struck me even harder was the fact that I didn’t have to worry about the driver in the front seat. I didn’t have to keep a pulse on the doors locking in case the driver was a creep, I didn’t have to make any uncomfortable conversation, I didn’t have to have a family member follow my ride juuuust in case. I just had to get in, and wait for a ride from point A to point B. It was like being a man!!! Not a care in the world!!! Personal safety who???
Which led me to one day, being exhausted from a very full day’s work, where… I accidentally fell asleep in the car. It was playing some smooth ambient tunes and driving relatively safely, and… I woke up to it letting me know that we arrived back to my hotel. I felt comfortable enough in this driving robot car that I took a nap and just trusted that it would get me to the right spot. I don’t know what the larger implications of this are, but just know that I am kind of weirded out by this, and… I do actually recommend trying driverless cars next time you’re in the Bay Area.
