Ship it anyway

It’s day 5 of Blogvent, where I blog every day in December!

I often see folks online saying they don’t feel like building that app, teaching that course, or writing that blog because someone else has already done it.

Stop that!

There’s so many problems to be solved, even when some people are working at solving them already.

When you’re thinking about differentiating your idea/post/course/app/thing, ask yourself:

  • Can you build it better, or simpler?
  • Can you apply yours to a smaller or larger audience?
  • Can you apply yours to a different audience?
  • Is it something you like anyway? If not, can you shape it to be something you’ll like more?

It’s okay if the answers to these are no, but it might help you refine your concepts to think this way.

You have a unique voice that others don’t have. Not everyone learns best from the top teacher out there, not everyone enjoys the writing of the most prolific blogger you know, and not everyone uses the most popular app for their problem. You don’t know who might benefit from what you offer, and you won’t know until you go for it!

This is all easier said than done, of course. I have so many half-baked ideas in a pile that I’ve (almost!) abandoned because I see someone has solved/shared what I wanted to. But maybe if I tell you to do it, you will encourage me with the stuff you ship first. Eh? Eh??

See you tomorrow!
