Two months at GitHub

I’ve officially been working at GitHub for two months, today, as Senior Director for Developer Advocacy!

It’s hard to believe it’s only been two months, honestly. I joined right at “crunch time” where everyone was deep in prepping for GitHub Universe (where I spoke during the keynote as well as co-hosted the livestream), and in a few weeks we have Microsoft Ignite, and on top of all of that, I had a family wedding in Asia thrown in there, as well as a U.S. presidential election. Everything has been so dang packed, and I admit I’m exhausted.

All this being said… my team is really awesome. I work with people who really care about developers and open source, and providing the best resources we can for as many people as we can. Everyone is really into their own hobbies and interests and families, and having that be front-and-center has really dictated the team culture. Having an 18-month-old (!) now myself, I’m really happy to be surrounded by folks who know that work is secondary to life outside of work, even in crunch time. Everyone works so hard, and pursues such excellence in what we produce, and still we close our laptops at the end of the day. That’s been a welcome change from the startup life I’ve been living for so long!

I do like that GitHub feels kind of like a startup still, within the megacorp that is Microsoft. Joining a very established organization is really interesting in terms of learning processes and knowing limits of what you can pursue, product-wise, compared to being on a tiny team building something from scratch. I think being in a role that pushes me, but also that I can disconnect from, is what I need in this stage of life, and I can have fun doing it! I’m really excited to see “non-crunch time” and get to know my team even better, and build even more for open source developers everywhere. I’ll keep ya posted!
